GUIDE TO HARNESSES, COLLARS, AND MORE

FLAT COLLAR – This is not recommended for leash walking with a puppy (no matter how big or small your pup is), because anything around the neck puts undue pressure on a growing dog’s delicate trachea. However, it is a necessity for carrying ID tags. Mature adult dogs might be able to walk with a flat collar. VERY mature adults.

BODY HARNESS – Fine for dogs ten pounds or under. Not ideal for bigger dogs because this harness gives them their entire body weight to pull you!

FRONT CLIP HARNESS – The leash attaches to the chest ring, which prevents excessive pulling. Favorite brands are: Walk Your Dog With Love and Freedom Harness. Second to those two (so, third) is the Sensation brand.

GENTLE LEADER –This head collar steers the dog by her nose, which prevents pulling, doesn’t put pressure on the neck, and allows you to move the leash just a fraction of an inch to get Fluffy’s nose away from that cigarette butt on the street! Gentle Leader is a brand name, and our preference. Other brands are not as secure.
